As an overview:
- System-on-Chip: RealTek RTL8197D
- Embedded CPU: RealTek RLX5281 @ 660 MHz, MIPS16 instruction set, 64KB instruction cache, 32KB data cache
- Embedded LAN controller: RealTek RTL8196C, two Ethernet MACs (only one used)
- Embedded USB controller: RealTek RTL8652, USB 2.0
- External flash memory chip: Macronix MX25L6405D, 3V, 64MBit (= 8MB)
- External RAM chip: Nanya NT5TU32M16DG-AC, 64MB
- External WLAN controller chip: RealTek RTL8188ER, IEEE 802.11bgn, 2.4 GHz, 150 MBit
- WLAN antenna: Internal, U.FL connector
There are two PCBs:
- the larger one carries the RJ-45 LAN and the power connector, the WPS/reset button, the infrared LEDs and the wireless antenna.
- the smaller one carries the camera module and a four PIN connector that offers a serial console. How nice :)
Here’s some pictures:
Serial console
The serial console connector’s pinout when viewed from the bottom side (ie. with the camera module not facing towards you) and from top to bottom is as follows:
- VCC (3.3V)
- RX
- GND
- TX
The serial port settings are 38400bps 8N1.

/etc
A quite tidy /etc directory:
# ls -la /etc/ drwxr-xr-x 7 admin admin 552 Oct 25 2013 . drwxr-xr-x 14 admin admin 220 Oct 25 2013 .. lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 7 Oct 25 2013 TZ -> /var/TZ drwxr-xr-x 2 admin admin 49 Oct 25 2013 boa -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 253 Oct 25 2013 ftp.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 16 Oct 17 2013 group -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 17 Oct 17 2013 host.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 146 Oct 17 2013 hosts -rwxr-xr-x 1 admin admin 9662 Oct 25 2013 icon.ico drwxr-xr-x 2 admin admin 66 Oct 25 2013 init.d -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 308 Oct 17 2013 inittab -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 54 Oct 25 2013 lld2d.conf -rwxr-xr-x 1 admin admin 6581 Oct 25 2013 mail.txt -rwxr-xr-x 1 admin admin 2968 Oct 25 2013 mail_nospace.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 1552 Oct 17 2013 mime.types -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 334 Oct 17 2013 motd -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 79 Oct 17 2013 passwd lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 8 Oct 25 2013 ppp -> /var/ppp -rwxr-xr-x 1 admin admin 9662 Oct 25 2013 realsil_gw.ico lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 16 Oct 25 2013 resolv.conf -> /tmp/resolv.conf drwxr-xr-x 2 admin admin 48 Oct 25 2013 samba drwxr-xr-x 2 admin admin 108 Oct 25 2013 script -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 8205 Oct 17 2013 services -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 87 Oct 17 2013 shadow.sample lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 8 Oct 25 2013 simplecfg -> /var/wps -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 6199 Oct 17 2013 simplecfgservice.xml drwxr-xr-x 2 admin admin 49 Oct 25 2013 ssl -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 110716 Oct 17 2013 start.wav lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 11 Oct 25 2013 udhcpc -> /var/udhcpc lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 11 Oct 25 2013 udhcpd -> /var/udhcpd -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 1359 Oct 17 2013 ushare.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 253 Oct 25 2013 version -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 4505 Oct 17 2013 vsftpd.conf -rwxr-xr-x 1 admin admin 2662 Oct 17 2013 wscd.conf -rwxr-xr-x 1 admin admin 3569 Oct 17 2013 wscd.conf.wps2.0
Boa is the Webserver used:
# ls -la /etc/boa drwxr-xr-x 2 admin admin 49 Oct 25 2013 . drwxr-xr-x 7 admin admin 552 Oct 25 2013 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 9565 Oct 25 2013 boa.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 admin admin 2008 Oct 25 2013 mime.types
The usual stripped-down inittab:
# cat /etc/inittab # Boot-time system configuration/initialization script. ::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS # Start an "askfirst" shell on the console (whatever that may be) #::askfirst:-/bin/sh ::respawn:-/bin/sh # Start an "askfirst" shell on /dev/tty2-4 #tty2::askfirst:-/bin/sh #tty3::askfirst:-/bin/sh #tty4::askfirst:-/bin/s
And the usual boot script that gives a whole lot information:
# cat /etc/init.d/rcS #!/bin/sh ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 mount -t proc proc /proc mount -t ramfs ramfs /var mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb mount -v -t devpts none /dev/pts mount -t sysfs none /sys mkdir /var/tmp mkdir /var/web mkdir /var/log mkdir /var/run mkdir /var/lock mkdir /var/system mkdir /var/dnrd mkdir /var/lib mkdir /var/lib/misc mkdir /var/wps mkdir /var/ppp mkdir /var/ppp/peers cp /bin/pppoe.sh /var/ppp/true echo "#!/bin/sh" > /var/ppp/true echo "PASS" >> /var/ppp/true mkdir -p /var/udhcpc mkdir -p /var/udhcpd cp /etc/simplecfgservice.xml /var/wps # modify dst-cache setting echo 2048 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/max_size echo 180 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_thresh echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_elasticity echo 35 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_interval echo 60 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/secret_interval echo 10 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_timeout echo "4096" > /proc/sys/net/nf_conntrack_max echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward echo 10000 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_max_tw_buckets ################################################ # neo@EDX: init network (bridge mode) ################################################ #bridge mode echo 1 > /proc/sw_nat ifconfig eth0 down ifconfig eth1 down ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:11:09:01:02:04 ifconfig eth1 hw ether 00:11:09:01:02:05 #set bridge brctl addbr br0 brctl setfd br0 0 brctl stp br0 0 brctl addif br0 eth0 ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 ifconfig br0 192.168.2.3 #clean nat table iptables -F iptables -F -t nat iptables -A INPUT -j ACCEPT #set kthreadd high priority for performance renice -20 2 #set ksoftirqd high priority for performance renice -20 3 #modify checksum checking if [ -f /bin/runAgent.sh ]; then iwpriv wlan0 write_mem dw,bb804048,1,1c fi #fixed Carrier Sense issue if [ -f /bin/HDLFind ]; then iwpriv wlan0 set_mib edcca_thd=30 fi #install driver for SD card if [ -f /lib/rts5139.ko ]; then insmod /lib/rts5139.ko fi ################################################### #create config file then exit. #Don't use this function after ipcam is running in background! #Otherwise the shared memory will be clean up! /bin/ipcam -xml formatSD=`/bin/getIPCamConfig SystemConfig_System_formatSD` # format SD card if [ "$formatSD" == "1" ];then formatSD fi #set rtl5642 audio dsp modelID=`/bin/getIPCamConfig SystemInfo_Firmware_modelID` if [ "$modelID" == "47" ]; then /bin/rtl5640_5040IW.sh if [ -f /bin/audioServer ]; then /bin/audioServer & fi elif [ "$modelID" == "48" -o "$modelID" == "49" ]; then /bin/rtl5640_5040IXT.sh if [ -f /bin/audioServer ]; then /bin/audioServer & else aplay -x 1 -f S16_LE -c 2 -r 16000 -D format_convert16 /etc/start.wav fi elif [ "$modelID" == "50" ]; then /bin/rtl5640_3040IWT.sh if [ -f /bin/audioServer ]; then /bin/audioServer & else aplay -x 1 -f S16_LE -c 2 -r 16000 -D format_convert16 /etc/start.wav fi elif [ "$modelID" == "53" ]; then if [ -f /bin/audioServer ]; then /bin/audioServer & else aplay -x 1 -f S16_LE -c 2 -r 16000 -D format_convert16 /etc/start.wav fi fi ################################################# echo "Starting ipcam..." sleep 1 /bin/ipcam & /bin/runWebServer.sh & sleep 5 LEDenable=`/bin/getIPCamConfig SystemConfig_LED_enable` if [ "$modelID" != "53" ] ; then if [ "$LEDenable" == "1" ]; then echo "0 1" > /proc/gpio echo "1 3" > /proc/gpio else echo "0 0" > /proc/gpio echo "0 0" > /proc/gpio fi fi if [ -f /bin/runStun.sh ]; then sh /bin/runStun.sh > /dev/console 2>&1 & fi if [ -f /bin/detectInternet.sh ]; then sh /bin/detectInternet.sh > /dev/console 2>&1 & fi if [ -f /bin/runRecorder.sh ]; then sh /bin/runRecorder.sh > /dev/console 2>&1 & fi #TODO /bin/WebServerMonitor.sh &

Hi
Great post! I was searching for disassembled IC-3116W and thank you for posting this.
Do you know if the lenses of the camera (that pulled out black part) can be detached from PCB and how? I was planing to bore a hole in my front door so that i don’t need to rush at the door when I’m in the garden, so I was planing to mount IP camera and bore the hole for lenses and stick it out so ti doesn’t look aggressive as whole camera looks when being mounted above the doors
Any advice?
Actually I’m not sure. While the camera module is fixed with two screws to the PCB, I can’t really try to detach it and see if it’s soldered somehow because my IC-3116W is in use, sorry.
